China's high-speed network
China has the world's largest high-speed rail network: over 45,000 km of track. It connects Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi'an, Chengdu, and practically every major city.
High-speed trains are called G-trains and D-trains:
- G-trains (Gaotie): up to 350 km/h. The fastest.
- D-trains (Dongche): up to 250 km/h. Slightly slower but cheaper.
How to buy train tickets
Option 1: Official app 12306
The official Chinese railway app. It's in English. You need to register with your passport. It's the cheapest option but can be complicated for tourists.
Option 2: Trip.com
The easiest platform for tourists. Buy tickets in English, with a small commission. Shows schedules, prices, and seat types.

Seat types
Second Class (Economy)
The cheapest option. Seats in a 3+2 configuration. Enough space for a multi-hour journey. Ideal for most travelers.
First Class

Business Class
1+2 or 1+1 configuration. Seats that convert into a bed. Individual screen. Very expensive but very comfortable.
Train stations
High-speed train stations are enormous, like airports. Keep in mind:
- Arrive 45-60 minutes early: Stations are large and there are security lines
- Verify the station: Beijing has several stations (Beijing South, Beijing West, etc.). Make sure you go to the right one
- Security check: Like at the airport, your luggage goes through X-ray
- Boarding: There are assigned waiting halls. Check the monitors for your train

Tips for tourists
1. Buy in advance
Tickets go on sale 15 days before departure. During peak seasons (holidays, festivals) they sell out quickly.

On G and D trains, your passport works as identification. You don't need to print the ticket, just show your passport.
3. Have internet at the station
