The Four Main Sections Near Beijing
Badaling — Most Popular, Most Crowded
- Distance from Beijing: 70 km (1.5 hours)
- Crowds: Very heavy, especially weekends and holidays
- Cable car: Yes
- Best for: Visitors with limited mobility or time
Badaling is the most restored and accessible section, but it gets extremely crowded. If you visit during peak season, expect to wait in long lines.
Mutianyu — Best for Most Tourists
- Distance from Beijing: 70 km (1.5 hours)
- Crowds: Moderate
- Cable car: Yes, plus a fun toboggan slide down
- Best for: Most international visitors
Mutianyu offers the best balance of scenery, restoration and crowd levels. The toboggan ride down is a highlight for many visitors.
Jinshanling — Best for Hiking and Photography
- Distance from Beijing: 130 km (2.5 hours)
- Crowds: Light
- Cable car: Yes
- Best for: Photographers and hikers
Jinshanling has partially restored and wild sections, offering authentic views with far fewer people. The sunrise and sunset here are spectacular.
Jiankou — Wild and Dangerous

- Best for: Experienced hikers only
Jiankou is completely unrestored and dangerous in places. Not recommended for casual tourists.
