Spring: the best balance
From March to May the weather is mild and blossoms begin. It is one of the best times for Beijing, Shanghai and the Great Wall, with comfortable temperatures and moderate crowds.
Autumn: the best time overall
September to November is cool and dry with clear skies. Ideal for the Great Wall and temples, and for outdoor Hanfu photo shoots.
Avoid the Chinese public holidays (the most important tip)
There are two dates when all of China travels at once:
- Golden Week: 1–7 October — the busiest week of the year. Avoid it to skip the crowds.
- Chinese New Year: January/February — millions travel home and transport is saturated.
Avoiding these dates gives you more space on trains, streets and sightseeing routes.
