Beijing is a photographer's dream. Ancient palaces, dramatic cityscapes, hidden alleys and world-class architecture. Here are the best spots for unforgettable photos.
1. The Great Wall at Sunrise
The Great Wall at Jinshanling or Mutianyu during golden hour is simply breathtaking. Arrive before sunrise for the best light and no crowds.
Best time: 6-7 AM (spring/autumn) Tip: Use a wide-angle lens for the rolling hills
2. Forbidden City
The world's largest palace complex offers endless photo opportunities. The golden rooftops, red walls and vast courtyards are iconic.
Best spots:
- Gate of Supreme Harmony — classic wide shot
- Corner towers — reflected in the moat at sunset
- Side courtyards — fewer crowds, intimate shots
Tip: The corner towers at sunset are Beijing's most photographed spot.
3. Temple of Heaven
The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is one of the most beautiful buildings in China. The blue tiles against the sky are stunning.
Best time: Morning (before 10 AM) for the best light and fewer crowds.
4. Hutongs (Traditional Alleys)
Beijing's ancient hutongs are full of character: red doors, stone lions, hanging laundry and elderly residents playing chess. Nanluoguxiang and Wudaoying are the most photogenic.
Tip: For a truly special photo, rent a Hanfu costume and shoot in a hutong — ancient costume in ancient setting.
5. Summer Palace
The long corridor, marble boat and Kunming Lake offer diverse compositions. The view from the hilltop temple is spectacular.
6. CCTV Headquarters
This gravity-defying building is a modern architecture masterpiece. Best photographed at dusk when the building lights up.
7. Jingshan Park
Climb to the top of this hill just north of the Forbidden City for a panoramic view of the entire palace complex. Best at sunset.
Photography Tips for Beijing
- Golden hours: 6-8 AM and 5-7 PM for the best light
- Avoid holidays: Chinese New Year and National Day (Oct 1-7) are incredibly crowded
- Bring a portable charger — cold weather drains batteries fast
- Use your phone — modern smartphones take excellent travel photos
- Ensure you have reliable internet for navigation and photo backup
