If you're traveling to China, you've probably heard that Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and YouTube are blocked. The two most common solutions are a VPN or a roaming eSIM/SIM card. But which one actually works better?
How Each Solution Works
VPN — You install an app on your phone, connect to a server outside China, and your traffic is encrypted and routed through that server. In theory, this bypasses the Great Firewall.
Roaming eSIM / SIM — You buy a SIM card (physical or eSIM) that uses international roaming. When your phone roams on a Chinese network, traffic goes through your home country's internet, not the Chinese firewall. WhatsApp, Google and Instagram work automatically.
The Big Problem with VPNs in China
VPNs used to work great in China. In recent years, things have changed:
- China actively blocks VPNs. The Great Firewall uses deep packet inspection to detect and throttle VPN connections. Many popular VPNs simply don't work.
- Unreliable connections. Even paid VPNs drop frequently. You might get 5 minutes of access, then nothing for an hour.
- You still need internet to download the VPN. Without Google Play or Apple App Store access, you can't download a VPN after arriving. You must install it before you travel.
- Ongoing subscription cost. Most reliable VPNs charge $5-12/month.
Why eSIM / SIM Is Better
A roaming eSIM or SIM card sidesteps the firewall entirely:
- Works on arrival. Land in China, turn on your phone, and WhatsApp works immediately.
- No app to install. No configuration needed.
- Reliable 4G/5G speeds. Full Chinese network speeds for maps, translation apps and browsing.

- Works everywhere. No dead zones like VPNs have when switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.

When a VPN Might Be Enough
A VPN can work if you're only in China for 1-2 days, mainly use hotel Wi-Fi, don't need a local phone number, and already have a paid VPN subscription.
